SXSW Films 2023 Guide

SXSW returns to Austin on March 10th and wraps up the party on Sunday March 19th. Celebrating the raw innovation, imagination and the emerging talent in filmmaking, the 2023 SXSW Film & TV Festival lineup offers a glimpse into the future of film, showcasing storytellers, their creative work, and the cinematic trends of today. March 10-19 Austin, TX will host everyone from iconic industry leaders such as Austin’s hometown favorite Robert Rodriguez to ambitious student filmmakers brought together by a love for the craft of film and storytelling.

SXSW 2023 Film Radar

CineVino’s film radar for SXSW offers a glimpse into what SXSW has to offer this year. Notable Headliners at this year’s SXSW include ‘Problemista’ from Julio Torres, ‘Evil Dead Rise’ by Lee Cronin,  ‘Flamin’ Hot’ directed by Eva Longoria and the Opening Night film ‘Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves’.

Northern Comfort (World Premiere)

Directed by Hafsteinn Gunnar Sigurðsson and a cosmic cast that includes the likes of Ella Rumpf, Lydia Leonard, Timothy Spall, Sverrir Guðnason, Simon Manyonda, and Rob Delaney. The synopsis is a diverse group of people with a chronic fear of flying are stranded in the wintry north. Joy Ride (World Premiere)

Directed by Adele Lim and from Seth Rogen and the producers of Neighbors, Joy Ride sets us with a hilarious, raunchy, and life-changing story of identity for four friends on a once-in-a-lifetime adventure. Starring Ashley Park, Sherry Cola, Stephanie Hsu, Sabrina Wu with cco-screenwriting of Crazy Rich Asians. Producers: Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg, James Weaver, Josh Fagen, Cherry Chevapravatdumrong, Teresa Hsiao, Adele Lim, Screenwriters: Cherry Chevapravatdumrong, and Teresa Hsiao.

Bloody Hell (World Premiere)

Director and Screenwriter Molly McGlynn’s SXSW world premiere stars Maddie Ziegler as a teenage girl diagnosed with a reproductive condition uppending her plans to have sex and propels her into exploring unusual methods to have a sex life, challenging her relationships with everyone in her life, but most importantly, herself. The cast also includes Emily Hampshire, Djouliet Amara, Ki Griffin, and D’Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai.

Hypnotic (Work-in-Progress)

Robert Rodriguez will screen his unfinished passion project at SXSW this year. Hypnotic  centers around a detective (Ben Affleck) who becomes entangled in a mystery involving his missing daughter and a secret government program while investigating a string of reality-bending crimes. The cast also includes Alice Braga, JD Pardo, Hala Finley, Dayo Okeniyi, Jeff Fahey, Jackie Earle Haley, and William Fichtner.

Queendom (World Premiere)

Agniia Galdanova heads to SXSW with her documentary Queendom. The story follows Gena, a queer artist from a small town in Russia, dresses in otherworldly costumes and protests the government on the streets of Moscow. She stages radical performances in public, which becomes a new form of art and activism – and puts her life in danger. Producers: Igor Myakotin, Agniia Galdanova

Hail Mary (World Premiere)

Rosemary Rodriguez directs this modern day immigrant story combined with a retelling of a classic bibical story of Mary and Joseph. A young Belizean girl ,Maria, finds herself mysteriously pregnant and trying to cross the US/MEX border while outrunning a deadly virus, the Cartels, Border Patrol and the right-hand man of the Devil. Cast: Natalia del Riego, Benny Emmanuel and Jack Huston with Angela Sarafyan
