The 37th Santa Barbara International Film Festival is currently being held with both in-person attendees and online attendees. The ten day event in Santa Barbara California includes panels and features from the year’s best in cinema including this year’s Oscar nominees as well as a welcome return to it’s traditions as the pre-Oscar festival as well as offering a look towards what we can expect in the year ahead. This year SBIFF includes 200 selections from 54 countries around the world.
Opening Night Film
THE PHANTOM OF THE OPEN
The festival opened on March 2nd with the Opening Night film for the SBIFF 2022 being The Phantom of the Open. Adequately named, the film stars Mark Rylance and is directed by Craig Roberts. The following evening the Outstanding Directors of the Year Award was presented to Paul Thomas Anderson (LICORICE PIZZA), Kenneth Branagh (BELFAST), Jane Campion (THE POWER OF THE DOG), Ryusuke Hamaguchi (DRIVE MY CAR), and Steven Spielberg (WEST SIDE STORY).
On Saturday, Day 4 of the 37th Annual Santa Barbara International Film Festival presented by UGG the Writers panel conversation took place in the morning as part of the industry panels series.
Tonight Penélope Cruz is scheduled to receive the Montecito Award. “In the most complex role written by the master Almodovar, Penelope Cruz delivers the best performance of her career and a master class in calibration and detailed acting,” said SBIFF’s Executive Director Roger Durling leading up to the event. “In my book, she’s one of the great performers of our time.”
