Paul Giamatti Will Receive the Cinema Vanguard Award At 39th Annual SBIFF:

On February 14th, 2024, Paul Giamatti will receive the Cinema Vanguard Award at the 39th annual Santa Barbara International Film Festival. Giamatti will be honored for his work on Focus Features’ The Holdovers from acclaimed director Alexander Payne.

Giamatti is nominated for an Academy Award this year for his role in The Holdovers alongside fellow actors Jeffrey Wright, Cillian Murphy, Bradley Cooper, and Coleman Domingo.

In The Holdovers, Paul Giamatti stars as a moving portrayal of curmudgeonly school teacher Paul Hunham at a New England prep school forced to remain on campus during Christmas break to babysit the handful of students with nowhere to go. Eventually he forms an unlikely bond a damaged, brainy troublemaker (Dominic Sessa) and the school’s head cook, who has just lost a son in Vietnam (Da’Vine Joy Randolph).

The Holdovers was nominated for five Academy Awards total. It also received seven BAFTAs. Giamatti was awarded both a Golden Globe & Critics Choice Award for his outstanding performance in the film as well as multiple other accolades such as the The Palm Springs International Film Festival “Icon Award” and the National Board of Review Award for Best Actor.
