Cannes 2023 Midnight Screenings

The Midnight Screenings of the 76th Cannes Film Festival are certainly on the CineVino radar with works from Robert Rodriguez, and Anurag Kashyap. With the following films scheduled to screen in the Midnight Screenings lineup, finding that fulfillment of mystery in the French Riviera looks manageable.

‘Kennedy’ by Anurag Kashyap

A return to Cannes for Anurag Kashyap with this Hindi Film Noir style thriller about a corrupt system and an insomniac ex-cop presumed dead who dwells in different circumstances looking for redemption. You can count me in.

OMAR LA FRAISE by Elias BELKEDDAR  |  1st film

Elias rekindles with the criminal underworld of Algiers with Omar, a fifty-year-old criminal exiled from France. His daily life is laced with small-time rackets but melancholy is always around the corner, pushing him to spend his nights in local dives. Much to Zohra’s dismay,as she would like him to settle down and build a family. Upon catching up with his old mates, Charlot and Rico, who are now dealing with young crooks, the penny drops: he’s a has-been. One night, as he decides to drown his sorrow in alcohol, he meets young Momo and his crew trying to rob the patrons. Omar then takes these youths under his wing. They’re going to take on the streets of Algiers. However, the underworld is filled with danger and death.

Elias’ starting point is Algeria, this “island” where the smell of yonder years lingers. Paradoxically, the city is also the thoroughly modern embodiment of what is at stake in contemporary societies. He wants to give this “playground”an iconic story that fits in the zeitgeist, a genre film reminiscent of Sergio Leone and Takeshi Kitano.

In the middle of a heat wave, an ominous cloud appears and with it, a lethal acid rain. A separated family will have to come together to escape this plague ravaging the world.

A detective investigates a mystery involving his missing daughter and a secret government program. The cast of Hypnotic includes Ben Affleck, Alice Braga, JD Pardo, and Dayo Okeniyi. Robert Rodriguez shared a first cut of Hypnotic with guests at SXSW.

“Silence” takes place when an accident occurs on a foggy bridge and, as a result, an unknown beast is unleashed.
